Shot blasting equipment should be compared by process purpose, part handling and site requirements. This guide reviews five equipment categories to help prepare a shortlist. It is not a market ranking or a statement that a particular model is available at a quoted price.
1. Automated Production Arrangements
Automation can be applied to different handling systems, including conveyors, hangers and tables. It is a control and handling characteristic rather than a single machine type.
Review the product range, approved recipes, loading tasks and interfaces with adjacent equipment. Define the response to a fault and how surface acceptance is verified. Automatic operation does not establish universal material compatibility or eliminate supervision and maintenance.
2. Portable Abrasive Blasting Equipment
Portable equipment may suit work where the component remains on site. Specify the actual process: pressure-pot air blasting, wet abrasive treatment, recovery blasting and mobile floor machines have different supporting requirements.
Include the compressor or power supply, hoses, containment, dust control, abrasive handling and waste collection. Transportability does not guarantee immediate setup, single-person operation or access to every surface.
3. Cabinet Blasting Equipment
Cabinets provide a contained workspace for compatible components and an approved abrasive process. Review internal dimensions, loading, visibility, nozzle or wheel arrangement and media recovery.
Check handling marks, access to recesses and residual abrasive. Enclosure does not establish dust-free operation or remove the need for exposure assessment, maintenance and protective measures.
4. Hanger-Type Equipment
Hanger arrangements support parts or fixtures through a defined handling route. Check total load, load distribution, suspension points, rotation and clearance throughout the operating motion.
Part spacing and fixture geometry affect exposure. A hanger system may need reorientation or an additional operation for shadowed surfaces. Validate the actual part mix rather than assuming that suspension provides complete coverage.
5. Tumbling or Drum Arrangements
Tumbling systems process compatible parts in bulk while their movement exposes surfaces to the abrasive. Review batch load, part-to-part contact, nesting and the ability to separate and unload the parts.
Fragile parts are not automatically suitable. Evaluate edge damage, deformation, media lodging and surface marks through a representative trial. Do not assume that tumbling is gentler than every vibratory finishing process.
Build a Comparison Matrix
| Requirement | Information for every shortlisted option |
|---|---|
| Part compatibility | Material, geometry, mass, protected areas and contact sensitivity |
| Required finish | Cleanliness, profile, dimensions and inspection method |
| Production | Complete cycle, changeovers and accepted output |
| Installation | Space, foundations, handling, utilities and extraction |
| Maintenance | Access, wear items, isolation and parts supply |
| Support | Training, commissioning, documentation and written service terms |
The categories can overlap. A cabinet can be automated, and a hanger arrangement can form part of a continuous line. Select the full configuration rather than treating labels as mutually exclusive choices.
Evaluate Cost Without a Generic Price Table
Request current quotations for the same scope, including supporting equipment, transport, installation and acceptance work. Compare operating energy, media, labor, inspection and maintenance using a defined production boundary.
A country of manufacture, automation label or supplier recommendation does not establish value by itself. Verify any relevant project experience and measured-result claim through traceable evidence.
Qualify the Shortlist
Provide representative parts and agree on the trial criteria before testing. Record settings, handling, inspection results and limitations. Include difficult surfaces and the required cleanup after treatment.
Use the accepted result and complete installation requirements to narrow the options. Do not replace this evaluation with unsupported claims of doubled throughput, reduced staffing, fixed service life or rapid financial return.
