Shot blasting can be evaluated for removing suitable rust, scale and certain burrs from components, but these are different treatment problems. Define the unwanted material, permitted surface change and downstream requirement before selecting abrasive, handling and equipment.

Removing corrosion products does not restore lost metal or prove that a component remains fit for service. Structural or dimensional concerns require the relevant inspection and engineering assessment.
Evaluate Rust and Scale Removal
Abrasive impact can dislodge suitable surface layers when the media and exposure are appropriate. Review the incoming condition and test difficult areas rather than assuming that all rust or scale will respond identically.
Specify visual cleanliness, profile and any other relevant contamination limits separately. Oil, grease or soluble contamination may need additional treatment. A dry abrasive process does not automatically leave a surface ready for every coating, welding or bonding operation.
For applicable steel preparation, ISO 8501-1 provides visual cleanliness assessment context. The product or coating specification must define the accepted condition and any additional tests.
Treat Deburring as a Separate Qualification
Some burrs may respond to an approved blasting process, while others require cutting, grinding, mass finishing or another method. Evaluate burr size and attachment together with the risk of edge rounding, deformation, embedded media or damage to functional surfaces.
Inspect the required edge condition and dimensions after treatment. Removing a visible protrusion does not prove that the part is safe to handle or ready for assembly. Check holes, threads and other features where abrasive or detached material may remain.
Match the Handling Arrangement
Rotary tables, hangers, tumbling systems, conveyors and directed-nozzle arrangements expose parts differently. Select them around geometry, mass, contact sensitivity and the surfaces requiring treatment.
Pipe interiors, chain contact areas and deep recesses need particular access review. An external blast arrangement should not be assumed to treat internal surfaces simultaneously. Fixtures and part movement must be demonstrated through a representative trial.
Compare Alternative Methods Fairly
Grinding, chemical treatment and abrasive blasting have different capabilities, supporting equipment and hazards. Compare the accepted result and complete work sequence rather than generic minutes-per-part figures.
Include loading, masking, pretreatment, media removal, inspection and any required post-treatment. A fast blast cycle can still be unsuitable if it creates extra rework or cannot reach the necessary surfaces.
Include Media, Recovery and Safety
Choose media compatible with the substrate, finish and machine. Monitor the working mix and define replenishment and separation requirements. More aggressive abrasive is not automatically the best choice for a burr or scale problem.
Assess dust, noise, abrasive escape, moving equipment and safe maintenance. OSHA's abrasive blasting guidance identifies relevant hazards and controls. Enclosed or automated equipment still requires an application-specific safety and exposure review.
Validate Before Production Release
Provide representative parts and agree on cleanliness, profile, edge, dimensional and damage limits. Record the media, settings, fixture and inspection method. Check difficult surfaces and retained material after unloading.
Compare accepted output, utilities, consumables and operator tasks through a defined measurement boundary. Do not promise a fixed preparation-time reduction, staffing saving or payback period without traceable operating evidence. Select the process because it meets the component's requirements, not because a generic success story implies guaranteed results.
