Shot blasting may be considered for suitable concrete areas within a sports venue when preparing for an approved flooring or coating system. The review must distinguish the substrate being prepared from the finished sports or pedestrian surface that will be used after the work.
Identify the Venue Area and Flooring System
Record the floor construction, existing finish, contamination, moisture condition and intended use. Concourse concrete, service areas and a specialist playing surface can have very different requirements.
Do not assume that equipment described as a road or floor shot blaster is suitable for timber courts, resilient sports flooring, rubber surfaces or every existing coating. Confirm the permitted preparation method with the flooring-system supplier and responsible designer before work.
Diagnose the Maintenance Need
Identify whether the issue is contamination, coating deterioration, surface damage, unevenness or another condition. Preparation for a replacement finish may be appropriate in some circumstances, while other defects require repair or a different maintenance method.
Shot blasting does not level every uneven floor or repair structural defects. It also does not establish that a sports surface will meet its performance requirements. Assess Slip Risk in the Intended Conditions
The HSE flooring guidance relates floor suitability to the activity and likely contamination. Assess the actual finished floor, cleaning regime, footwear and use conditions. A rough appearance or an unexplained friction coefficient is not a complete slip-risk assessment.
Where testing is required, use an appropriate method and competent interpretation. Keep the conditions and locations with the result. Do not convert a preparation treatment into a promised reduction in spectator or athlete injuries.
Plan Work Around Venue Operations
Define access routes, restricted zones, deliveries and the impact on events. Include equipment movement, lifting or floor-loading restrictions where relevant. Review extraction and abrasive containment, including potential effects on nearby occupied areas.
Do not assume immediate reuse after preparation. Any subsequent repair or coating must meet its application and cure requirements before the area is reopened. Retain a clear release checklist covering cleanliness, completed work and the specified final inspections.
Evaluate Maintenance and Cost with Records
Compare the full work scope and the expected maintenance requirements of the selected flooring system. Include setup, edges, repairs, materials, labour, cure time and inspection. Treat service-life or cost forecasts as assumptions until supported by suitable evidence.
Keep the substrate assessment, trial, installation and final acceptance records together. This supports a venue-specific decision without presenting an illustrative maintenance plan as a stadium case study or assigning unsupported durability and safety results to it.
