Preparing Steel Pipes for Corrosion-Protection Coatings: Abrasive Blasting Guide

Steel pipes need the surface preparation required by their corrosion-protection coating specification. Abrasive blasting is one possible method for removing suitable rust or scale and creating a specified profile. It is not automatically mandatory for every coating system or sufficient by itself to establish coating performance.

Start with the Coating Specification

Obtain the required substrate condition, cleanliness, profile and contamination limits. Confirm whether the work covers the pipe exterior, interior or selected areas, and which inspection methods apply.

The preparation method should meet those requirements and suit the material and geometry. Do not assume that a generic “sandblasted” description establishes acceptance.

Separate Cleanliness from Surface Profile

Visual cleanliness and surface profile are different characteristics. ISO 8501-1 provides a visual steel-cleanliness framework; it does not establish every profile or contamination requirement.

Specify the profile measurement method and acceptance limits required by the coating system. Greater roughness is not automatically better. An unsuitable profile can remain a problem even when the surface appears clean.

Address Contamination Through the Complete Process

Identify oil, grease, soluble salts, rust, scale and existing coating as applicable. Determine which require separate preparation or verification rather than assuming abrasive impact removes them all.

Select abrasive compatible with the substrate, equipment and contamination limits. The term “sandblasting” should not be treated as a recommendation to use silica sand. Assess hazards from both the abrasive and removed material.

For wet processing, review water quality, drying, flash rust and any proposed additives against the approved coating route.

Review Pipe Handling and Access

The machine must support and present the pipe so required areas can be treated and inspected. Check ends, welds, contact points and any shielded surfaces.

Internal treatment requires a separate access and tooling assessment. External rotation or a conveyor arrangement does not establish cleaning of the bore. Include any additional treatment in the complete-cycle plan.

Do Not Treat Cleaning as Stress Relief or Repair

Blast cleaning does not establish relief of residual stress, improved pressure capacity or increased mechanical strength. It also does not restore metal lost through corrosion or eliminate every defect.

Required integrity inspection remains separate. If controlled peening is part of the component specification, obtain the approved process and verification requirements rather than inferring it from cleaning.

Protect the Accepted Surface Before Coating

Follow the approved conditions for handling, storage and the interval before coating. Inspect for recontamination or corrosion as required before proceeding.

Coating performance also depends on application, curing, inspection and service conditions. No universal service-life or corrosion-resistance improvement follows solely from adding a blasting step.
