Portable abrasive blasting equipment should be selected for the surface, work area, available air supply and required containment. Compare the actual configuration and operating instructions rather than relying on a general “best machine” ranking.
Define the Job and Work Area
Record the substrate, coating or contamination to be removed, required finish and size of the work. Identify delicate features and areas that must be protected. Determine whether abrasive blasting is permitted and suitable for the material before choosing equipment.
Review access, movement between work areas, containment, waste handling and the people who may be exposed nearby. Portability describes how equipment can be moved; it does not establish that blasting can safely take place in any location.
Compare Feed Arrangements
Gravity-fed tools carry media above the gun. Siphon arrangements draw media from a separate container, while pressure-feed equipment uses a pressurized abrasive supply. The appropriate choice depends on the required process, duty and available utilities.

Do not assume that every siphon tool or pressure pot has the same air demand or treatment rate. Compare model-specific data and, where needed, a representative trial.
Match the Air System to the Nozzle
Check required pressure and air volume under operating conditions, including the nozzle size, hose length, connectors and other simultaneous demands. A compressor’s advertised pressure alone does not establish that it can supply the needed flow continuously.
Include air treatment and moisture control specified by the equipment manufacturer. Inspect nozzle wear because it can alter demand and process behaviour. For pressure equipment, confirm the applicable vessel documentation, protective devices and safe depressurization procedure.
Verify Abrasive Compatibility
Confirm the media type and size permitted by the machine and nozzle. Assess compatibility with the substrate and desired surface texture, as well as dust, contamination and disposal implications. A general-purpose abrasive recommendation is not suitable for every surface.
The term “sandblasting” does not require the use of silica sand. The OSHA abrasive blasting guidance discusses hazards from abrasives and the materials being removed, alongside engineering controls, training and personal protection.
Compare Practical Portability and Maintenance
Consider loaded weight, stability, wheel arrangement, lifting provisions and the route between work areas. Include the compressor, collector or containment equipment, hoses and abrasive supply in the mobility review. A lightweight gun may still depend on substantial supporting equipment.
Check refill and cleanup tasks, access to wear parts and the availability of correctly identified replacements. Obtain instructions for storage, inspection and maintenance. Do not accept undocumented pressure settings or a generic promise of compatibility with all media.
Request Evidence Before Purchase
Ask for the exact model identification, current technical data, operating manual, included equipment list and applicable conformity documentation. Review the controls and protective arrangements for the intended workplace, including respiratory protection where required by the exposure assessment.
Use the same sample surface and acceptance criteria when comparing demonstrations. Record the setup, media, air conditions and complete operating cycle. The purchase decision should follow that evidence, the installation requirements and the realistic operating scope rather than unverified claims of hands-on testing or brand superiority.
